Raising employee awareness for environmental protection – promoting awareness and strengthening responsibility

Nature and biodiversity measures in the commercial sector are most effective when they are clearly communicated and actively supported by employees, customers, and partners. Raising awareness means getting staff involved and informing them about the benefits of these initiatives. This can be done through internal workshops, informational materials, guided site tours, or dedicated action days.

Companies that communicate in a targeted and transparent way strengthen their role as responsible actors and can build trust among customers and the public. These measures can also be integrated into CSR strategies or sustainability reports.

Awareness‑raising is particularly effective when employees are actively involved in the design and implementation of measures. This could include, for example, tree‑planting activities, the creation of flowering strips, or the maintenance of nesting aids. Such involvement strengthens their identification with the company and helps anchor sustainable thinking in the long term.

The following sections outline the key steps to consider during planning and implementation

Analysis of objectives and requirements

Identifying potential solutions

  • Analyse the current situation (company mindset, communication strategy).
  • Evaluate employee’s needs, ideas, and expectations, for instance through a questionnaire.
  • Plan the core content of the potential formats (workshops, participation in guided tours, action days, newsletters).
  • Determine whether the selected format could be implemented internally with your employees (e.g., team building), or whether it would be more appropriate to hire a qualified expert (coach, environmental specialist).

Consultation, support and application for possible subsidies

Contact local or national institutions that can provide technical guidance:

Project implementation

  • Consider implementing the identified objectives (see above) as a joint initiative among employees (team building). Consult local experts or online resources to identify relevant measures that you can implement internally.
  • Seek support at the above-mentioned stakeholders: In some cases, they may also be able to facilitate workshops or training sessions.
  • Conduct workshops, produce informational material, and organise joint internal activities, ideally involving additional local partners (e.g., schools, NGOs).
  • Consider the required budget, particularly the time commitment, as financial costs are usually minimal.
  • How can I inform customers or partners specifically about our measures?
  • Identify possible collaborations (for example with non governmental organisations, municipalities, or schools)?
  • How can the planned measures be integrated into corporate social responsibility reports or sustainability reports?

Note

Nature conservation measures are more effective when they are understood and supported by employees and partners. Well-organized initiatives build acceptance and strengthen a sense of responsibility. This allows biodiversity to become a core part of the corporate culture and communication.

Follow-up

  • Collect feedback, participation data, and insights on the measure’s impact on employees’ environmental awareness and behaviour.
  • Is there a visible effect (internally and externally)? Visible measures strengthen employee’s identification with the company and improve its image.
  • Report the results through internal and / or external communication, and include them in the sustainability report where applicable.
